me "we never give up." and while it seems now the search on tuesday did not find kevin collins. it did reignite the cold case. we have learned police interviewed a person of interest back in 1984. who lived at the house where the search took place on tuesday. at the time, that man allowed police to search his home on masonic ave. that man was never arrested and has since passed away. here is more from the chief: >> "in going over the cold case the inspectors developed some new information they did more investigation, there is more investigation that needs to be done but it was enough in concert with the fbi to get a search warrant to go back there we have better tech now the cadaver dogs went through there. they did both hit on a location it appears the hit that they hit on are the bones of an animal but the me is still going through that." >> reporter: the chief would not elaborate on what prompted investigators to get that search warrant.

>> there were flames coming from the front door it was scorched. the floor mat was burning there seemed to be some type of liquid, kerosene. >> reporter: grabbing a garden hose, the owner doused the fire confining damage to the wooden front door and some nearby plumbing and electrical fixtures. less than 24 hours earlier, somebody slashed the tires and threw yellow paint on a car owned by the victim's daughter. there's yellow paint all over the street too. >> i have no idea who would want to do something like this. this is one of the safest neighborhoods will certainly not had an incident like this before. >> reporter: friends and families are stopping to offer their help and their eyes and ears going forward. they are installing a video

(male announcer) this is the bay area news station, kron 4 news starts now. >> today was the first congressional hearing on gun control since the connecticut school shooting. and it began with a plea from former congresswoman gabrielle giffords. catherine heenan is here >> catherine: gabrielle giffords - who was shot in the hear 2 years ago - felt she had to make an appearance on behalf of gun control. it wasn't easy for her.but testimony which began today's hearing. giffords friends say it took hours of practice for her to get ready for her statement. since being injured in a mass shooting in arizona in 2011.she has trouble walking and speaking. but it was her testimony that many people wanted to hear. her husband mark kelly would later say that if there had been tougher background checks. his wife might have been spared. or if there had been >> there are too many children that are dying we must do something! >> catherine: a limit on the size of ammunition magazines.the shooting that wounded her might have been more limited.

also testifying today. the head of the national rifle association. he didn't give much ground.saying he does 'not' support the expansion of backgroundchecks for gun sales. you miss the point completely i think that it is basic. >> i think you have missed the point. >> catherine: senator dick durbin of illinois also passed on the sad news of one of the latest victims of gun violence in chicago. a 15 year-old honors student named hadiya pendleton. killed tuesday in a park minutes after taking a final exam at school. just last week hadiya performed with her high school band at president obama's inaugural. the tragedy comes days after the president - whose home is only a mile from the shooting scene - announced plans to ban assault weapons as part of an overhaul of gun laws.

>> new information tonight at 6. in the search for kevin collins, the 10-year- old boy that went missing in san ago. kron 4's justine waldman has been following this story since it broke.and spoke with investigators a short time ago. she joins us in the studio now with the latest from police. justine? >> reporter: i spoke with san francisco's police chief today. about the search. he told me investigators started to go over the cold- case again and found something that caught their attention. and that is what brought them back to this house on masonic avenue. a home that investigators searched when 19-84. what *exactly that tip or clue is. is still part of >> "regoing over the file now they determined they have probable cause to seek the search warrant now none of these cases are ever over tech keeps getting better and better investigative tech keep improving and from a guy who searched more places and under more things >> reporter: we are waiting for testing to be finished on the animal bones that investigators found. just to make sure it is not kevin. i also just talked with. the lead investigator who handled the case when it broke in 1984. he told me he remembered that everyone was a suspect. when the time kevin disappeared. and that during his search he uncovered tunnels under

haight street. but he is not sure if the current investigators will go back and look there again. also, there were tunnel's found under haight st. if those have anything to do with his disappearance. reporting live, justin waldman, kron 4. >> pam: the search for kevin collins has lasted almost three decades. and its been a very emotional journey for the family. kron 4's charles clifford kron has a look back. >> reporter: the day he disappeared at a bus stop they saw the boy talking to a tall blond man with a black dog. after the disappearance, they searched a home that matched that description but did not find any trace. the man was never charged with the crime. after his disappearance

volunteers scored san francisco for weeks. he looked for the boy and it eventually went national covering the cover of newsweek. they set up the kevin collins foundation and perhaps the most promising was when a former priest at san quentin saying that an inmate confessed to killing him and buried him year sought to talk, michigan. that inmate died. -bearing can your saugatuck... michigan >> that is the real torture. >> reporter: although the the whereabouts is that is the mystery. this provided the foundation to help other children reunite with their parents. two years later, in 1996 the kevin collins bashan closed down but sometimes they come in. they're still hoping

that they will find out what happened. >> we could finally get some closure and be happy with that outcome. charles clifford, kron 4. >> this new lead is not easy on this especially, the parents. and she spoke with us. >> it is hurtful for them to see them at that age. his brother was just one year older, and looked practically identical. it brings back stuff and it all comes up. forgetting how little he was. so, part of me would say that it would be nice if we knew what happened. and part of me still cannot say that past a mother. >> reporter: we are visiting

with her with an collins. and new at six. the man who owned the building that was searched yesterday in is speaking out. he told kron4's maureen kelly what he remembers about the people who lived there when kevin collins disappeared. >> it's scary >> reporter: daryl mccurry owned the pair of flats from 1977 to 1988.and was renting both units out. he says the upper flat had many different tenants move in and out.but down below he rented to two men.he believed to be a gay couple.who lived there for several years. he says he doesn't remember either man fitting the description of the person seen talking to kevin the day he vanished.tall with long blond hair.with a large black dog. daryl says he was in and out of that building.doing maintenance.and doesn't remember anything odd about the pair.except for one interaction with one of the men. normally the downstairs

started working out some expletives. and i thought that this is a bit shocking. i thought that it was inappropriate and a bit out of control. it made me wonder about his personality >> reporter: even still he's skptical that his former building is connected to the decades old case. >> if something really did happen there if they are tearing up concrete it seems like a neighbor would have heard something. or i would have noticed or the other tenants would have noticed something. i find it highly unusual that something did really happened there. >> reporter: maureen kelly kron4 news, >> pam: just days before the super bowl, it is operation clean up after one of the players saying that he is not ok with the n f l and gay people. this was on tuesday with a radio

police identified the suspect as arthur d. harmon, saying that he is "armed and dangerous." late this morning police say he entered the building and opened fire hitting three people. the other two victims have been hospitalized police do not believe the shooting was a random act. a huge storm system is ripping through the midwest and down through louisiana. this video is from georgia of a tornado forming. tornadoes and wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour have been reported. at least two people are dead from the violent weather while others are trapped in homes and businesses experts say more potentially dangerous weather is possible. thousands were left without power and officials warn flooding could be a problem in affected areas. >> pam: now to world news. in brazil, police say faulty and fake fire extinguishers were found in a night club that caught fire and killed 235 people.
